As a junior volunteer, Mark Praschak dreamed, and as a teenage Firefighter/EMT he learned about life and death, first hand. The challenges the author faced made him yearn for more skills and knowledge, as he matured in the profession, and in life.
After losing his way for six years, Mark reentered the Service with a vengeance. He catapulted to the rank of Firefighter/Paramedic and started his professional career with the Baltimore City Fire Department.
In the short time he spent at Medic 16, he’d see things that were unimaginable, call after call. He brought life into the world for the first
time, but saw more lives lost. The job became a daily battle with the demon of the Service; ‘burn-out’. He witnessed it’s evil and struggled to deal with it’s delicate balance.
Mark turns to his mentors, in a desperate attempt to survive. Their wisdom and experience show him the way. He was ‘programmed’ like a machine, to carry on. The challenges were many, and the rewards few, but he won the battle, retiring from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department as a decorated veteran at the age of 48.
All of the stories here, are true. Some are uplifting, and some are hilarious, but most of them are sobering and teach us that life is fragile; handle with care.

Medic 16 Medic 16 Chronicles of a Street Medic eBook Mark Praschak Reviews
I could not put this book down!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and appreciated the honesty. So many books are written by people who have never truly experienced what they write about, this is definitely not the case with this book. Mark wrote about his life experiences with the fire service, both good and bad. I cant wait for his next book.
I'll admit that my review is a little biased.
I was a volunter emergency medical technician in Anne Arundel County, MD for 16 years. Three of those years were spent as a CRT performing Advanced Life Support at the same station as the author.
That being said, we're not that close that I would bother going out and writing a review if I didn't think it was a good read. It is written simply enough that lay people should enjoy it but it especially amusing to those of us who have served in the fire department or in emergency medicine.
The pranks he wrote about reminded me of some of the fun I had as a volunteer back in the 80's. I rank his book right up there with Dennis Smith's "Report From Engine 82."
as another reviewer stated, the kindle version of this book is so poorly rendered that it is a chore to read. Also, I got the impression someone was being paid by the comma. Nevertheless, when you can ignore the poor type and punctuation the narrative is compelling. If you can get past the poor quality of the version you will be rewarded with a glimpse into the world of a fire-fighter paramedic whose 35 yr career virtually spans the history of the paramedic service itself.
Unbelievably, the version has a line break (carriage return) every one and a half lines of text (using the smallest text size). It is basically unreadable. is letting me "return" the version. I'll likely order the hardcopy which, also unbelievably, is cheaper.
Excellent read!
